After sending an email I receive a message "Delivery Status Notification (Delay)"

Description

Although it is not common, sometimes clients might send someone an email and later receive a message that looks something like this:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.

       <destination email address>

What does this message mean and why am I receiving it?

This message means that delivery of your email is taking longer than expected. There are many reasons why this can occur. The most common reason is that the end-customers email service is temporarily unresponsive or unavailable, resulting in a temporary delivery error. In this situation our servers send you this notice and mark your outgoing email for a retry at a later time.

Less commonly, this message can also be caused if there is a backlog of email deliveries in which case the work queues that hold outbound emails can begin to grow and emails such as this are sent out to individuals to let them know that things are running a little slower then normal.

The reasons really don't matter all that much because the server(s) involved in processing your email will almost always resolve these issues without human intervention and those delayed emails will be delivered.

Will my email be lost? Do I need to send it again?

No. Your email will not be lost and no, you do not need to send it again.
